Después de 1887 y 1892, ésta fue la tercera vez que se daba éste emparejamiento de final de Copa FA. Mientras tanto, el Aston Villa se había convertido en un gran conjunto que dominaba el fútbol inglés, aunque el WBA tenía todavía a dos de sus jugadores de 1892. Uno de ellos era el portero ”Joe” Reader (27.2.1866-8.3.1954), que era muy regular y siempre se mantuvo fiel a su club. El exterior izquierdo de Birmingham ”Steve” Smith, que había marcado dos veces en cada una de las dos anteriores eliminatorias, se quedó sin anotar en la final. Por su parte, el delantero centro John Devey, marcó el gol más rápido de una final de Copa FA, que fue también el único tanto de este partido. Los dos grandes hombres del partido fueron los dos capitanes, que gozaban de fama mundial. Lo que también llegó a ser mundialmente conocido fue el robo del trofeo en Birmingham. Ésta fue la primera final de Copa FA que se disputaría en el recientemente construido Crystal Palace de Londres, el mismo lugar en el que se erigiría el Alexandra Palace Studio de la BBC más tarde.
