Este torneo fue disputado por 161 equipos, y en la primera ronda, el 1 de septiembre de 1888, el Cowlairs derrotó al Temperance Athletic 18:2, mientras que el “Hibs” (Edimburgo) fue eliminado por el Mossend Swifts. En los octavos de final, dos partidos se tuvieron que repetir debido a la poca visibilidad (niebla), incluso el encuentro entre el Third Lanark y el Abercorn FC (Paisley) hasta en tres ocasiones antes de que se impusieran los “Thirds”, que continuaron hasta eliminar al defensor del título Renton en las semifinales ante 6.000 espectadores. El Glasgow Celtic estuvo también impresionante, eliminando al Rangers (entre otros) y superando al Dumbarton FC con tres goles de “Bill” Groves, que dos años antes había ganado la Copa escocesa con el Hibernian FC (Edimburgo). Los “Celts” también ficharon a James Kelly y a Neil McCallum del Renton, y a James McLaren del “Hibs”. Aun así, todo esto no fue suficiente, y el Third Lanark, capitaneado por el delantero centro “Tinney” Oswald (3.1.1868-26.2.1948), estuvo soberbio. Su hermano John Oswald jugaba de interior derecho.
El Celtic demostró tener mal perder, y presentó con éxito una reclamación en la que argumentaba que la final se había visto afectada por una fuerte nevada. En la repetición del partido, ambos equipos presentaron gran batalla una vez más, y el ídolo “Tinney” Oswald, el iluminado del juego, llevó de nuevo al Lanark a la victoria. El Celtic alineó a los hermanos “Willy” y “Tom” Maley. ¡En esta competición de Copa hubo 34 partidos “impugnados”!
