En el partido de primera ronda del 4 de septiembre de 1887, el Arbroath derrotó al Orion 18:3. Excepto el Queen's Park y el Renton, todos los equipos grandes fueron eliminados antes de los octavos de final. Estos dos conjuntos se enfrentaron en las semifinales, en donde el “Chicken Bree team” se aprovechó de su ventaja como local. Con una espectacular victoria de dos dígitos en semifinales, el once visitante del Cambuslang se plantó en la final, aunque no fue ésta la única victoria de dos dígitos que este equipo consiguió con las dos parejas de hermanos James y John Buchanan, y James y Hugh Gourlay.
En la final, sin embargo, el Cambuslang no tuvo ninguna opción. Neil McCallum, que sólo tenía 19 años, “Harry” Campbell de 21 y el exterior izquierdo McNee marcaron uno gol cada uno. Al cabo de tres años, el Renton FC ganaba la Copa escocesa de nuevo. El defensa del Renton “Andy” Hannah (17.9.1864- .6.1940) era un atleta que también había ganado muchos trofeos en los “Highland Games”, especialmente en triple salto. John Lindsay (1862-16.10.1932) era un portero práctico y fiable. Junto a “Baldie” McCall, formaban un potente triangulo en la defensa.
