Sheffield Wednesday Football Club también conocido como
The Owls (en español,
Los Búhos) fue fundado el
4 de septiembre de
1867, se dice que se llama wednesday porqué se fundó un miércoles. El equipo inicialmente era un equipo de
críquet, pero jugaban al
fútbol en
invierno. En
1925 desaparece la sección de
críquet y el equipo se dedica solo al fútbol. En aquella época el equipo era conocido como
The Wednesday. Su mascota es un búho llamado
Barney
Desde su fundación el club ha jugado de local con camisetas de color
blanco y
azul, tradicionalmente a líneas verticales. Sin embargo, este no siempre ha sido el caso y ha habido algunas variaciones en el tiempo. Una fotografía monocromática de la temporada
1874-
75 muestra al Wednesday usando camisetas de color oscuro, mientras que el "Rules of the Sheffield Football Association" de
1871 describió la camiseta del Wednesday como azul y blanca a líneas horizontales. Además, un diseño cuartelado azul y blanco fue usado en
1887 y una camiseta azul con mangas de color blanco entre
1965 y
1973.
