En los dieciseisavos de final, el subcampeón inglés Bristol City fue eliminado por el conjunto londinense Woolwich Arsenal (1:2). El campeón Newcastle United había caído contra todo pronóstico contra el modesto club londinense del Crystal Palace (0:1) en la ronda anterior. Otro club de Londres, el Tottenham Hotspur, necesitó dos partidos de desempate contra el Blackburn Rovers (1:1 y 1:1 y 2:1) para llegar a octavos de final , en donde los »Spurs« eliminaron al Notts County (0:4). En cuartos de final, los »Magpies« cayeron ante el West Bromwich Albion (1:3). Los »Throstles« tuvieron que abandonar todas sus esperanzas en semifinales como últimos representantes de segunda división.
Los »Owls«, que llegaron de nuevo a la final de copa once años después, se enfrentaron a los defensores del título, que contaban con los hermanos »Bill« y »Bob« Balmer en la defensa y con el internacional irlandés de 35 años, »Billy« Scott, en la portería. Scott era el gran pilar de su equipo y dirigía a sus compañeros con tanta habilidad como la que él mismo tenía dentro del área y bajo los palos. El partido parecía encaminado a un empate, puesto que ambos equipos estaban bastante igualados, pero entonces el Sheffield Wednesday, que lucía equipaje de visitante, presionó en la última fase del partido y anotó el tanto de la victoria en uno de sus electrizantes ataques. El capitán y líbero, »Tom« Crawshaw (1872-25.11.1960), que era considerado como el mejor jugador inglés en su posición en aquellos tiempos, estuvo sensacional.
