El defensor del título Bury FC cayó en octavos de final contra el Sheffield United (1:2) y el Sheffield Wednesday superó ampliamente al equipo de segunda división Manchester United (6:0). En esta ronda el Derby County necesitó dos partidos de desempate (2:2 y 2:2 y 1:0) para imponerse al Wolverhampton Wanderers con un gol de Bloomer. En cuartos de final, el Sheffield United fue derrotado por el conjunto de segunda división Bolton Wanderers (0:2), mientras que el otro equipo de segunda división, Tottenham Hotspur, sucumbió ante el Sheffield Wednesday (1:1 y 0:2). En semifinales, los »Owls« fueron eliminados por el Manchester City, mientras que los »Trotters« ganaron al Derby County (1:0) con un gol del exterior izquierdo Robert Taylor.
Así pues, por primera vez desde 1872, los 22 jugadores del partido debutaban en una final de la copa inglesa. Se daba como favoritos a los subcampeones de Manchester en detrimento del conjunto de segunda división procedente de Bolton. Sin embargo, los »Trotters« ofrecieron un brillante juego de equipo, y mantuvieron el partido abierto hasta el final, aunque el internacional galés de 29 años »Billy« Meredith, considerado en aquellos tiempos por todos como el mejor exterior derecho del mundo, consiguió pronto el tanto de la victoria. Meredith poseía un extraordinario dominio de la pelota y era conocido también por el sobrenombre de »Old Skinny«. También era aficionado al golf o a la pesca, lo cual le relajaba. El Bolton fue el mejor equipo en la primera parte, pero desaprovechó todas sus oportunidades. Así que fueron los »Citizens« los que se aseguraron la copa en una tarde soleada de domingo. En esta final de copa inglesa participaron seis escoceses y dos galeses.
El formato de la FA Cup de la temporada tuvo dos rondas preliminares, cinco rondas de clasificación, una ronda intermedia, tres rondas adecuada, y las semifinales y final.
