El Third Lanark AC (Glasgow) causó una gran sorpresa en Escocia. Después de perder su primer partido 3:4 contra su rival local el Rangers, se mantuvo invicto en sus siguientes 16 partidos – desde el 22 de agosto de 1903 hasta el 4 de enero de 1904 – e incluso llegó a no perder ni un punto en sus últimos seis partidos de liga. La sorpresa fue perfecta cuando el "Thirds" se convirtió en campeón de Escocia. También fue, con diferencia, el equipo más fuerte fuera de casa. James Raeside, de 25 años, fue el único portero de esta temporada que disputó todos los partidos de su equipo. También contó con los excelentes defensas "Bob" Barr y "Willie" McIntosh. El capitán y medio centro "Tod" Sloan era dueño del centro del campo y el jugador de 36 años de edad "Lalty" Wilson era el creador en el ataque, aunque los cinco delanteros eran peligrosos. John Campbell había fichado procedente del rival local Celtic. Se necesitarían 25 años antes de que otro "outsider" ganara el campeonato escocés.
La mayoría de los goles de la liga escocesa los marcó el Glasgow Rangers FC, en cuyas filas también militaba el máximo goleador de la temporada. La mayor cantidad de goles en un partido de liga, sin embargo, los marcó James Quinn, que pertenecía al rival local Celtic y que anotó cinco tantos contra el Kilmarnock (marcador final 6:1) el 23 de abril de 1904. En la promoción por el descenso participaron los tres últimos clubes clasificados de primera división y los tres primeros de segunda división. Los tres equipos de primera división "Diamonds", "Well" y "Killies" resultaron ser más fuertes.
