En la primera ronda, el equipo de divisiones inferiores Beith eliminó al Kilmarnock de la primera división (2:2 y 3:1). En octavos de final, los visitantes superaron al equipo de Cowdenbeath (4-0) antes de sucumbir ante el Glasgow Rangers (1:5) en cuartos de final. En las semifinales, el partido Celtic-Rangers fue suspendido, pero se dejó el marcador tal cual. Jugando ante 36.000 espectadores, los »Gers« ganaron con dos goles de Finlay Speedie y John Robertson. Así pues, los campeones de esta temporada tuvieron que abandonar toda esperanza de conseguir el doblete escocés. Cuando el delantero del Celtic »Jimmy« Quinn fue expulsado a 12 minutos del final, los espectadores invadieron el terreno de juego. El partido se reanudó finalmente, pero fue suspendido de nuevo cuando los espectadores realizaron otra invasión de campo.




De este modo, la final ofreció un derby local entre el campeón de 1904 y el subcampeón de 1905, y atrajo a un gran número de espectadores. Ambas defensas, sin embargo, habían conseguido convertirse en las menos goleadas durante la liga, y el partido se mantuvo en empate sin goles hasta el final de la prórroga. En el desempate de la final, el futbolista de 36 años de edad »Latty« Wilson fue la figura del partido con dos goles en su haber.
