FA CUP 1888-1889

En la temporada 1888/89, el Preston North End (PNE) dio grandes pasos no sólo en la Liga sino también en la Copa, en donde se vio una repetición de la final de 1888. En esta ocasión, el magistral liderazgo de John Goodall – el entonces mejor futbolista del mundo – no tuvo rival alguno. "Nick" Ross , que era hermano de James, fue baja en defensa, pero no importó ya que los ”Lilywhites” fueron claramente superiores a los ”Wolves”, y el primer equipo en ganar el doblete inglés. Aun así, el PNE no tenía entrenador ni manager durante el periodo 1886-1889. El capitán del Wolverhampton John Brodie (30.8.1862-16.2.1925), cofundador de los ”Wolves”, estudió en el Saltley College, se convirtió en maestro de profesión y un delantero muy popular.

A partir de la temporada 1888/89, se puso en marcha el principio de la verdadera competición, con 32 equipos en la primera y principal ronda, precedida de fases clasificatorias en las diversas regiones. Como en la temporada 1888/89, 149 equipos disputaron el torneo de la FA Cup.
