En 1888, producto del incremento de jugadores profesionales, se organizó la primera liga de fútbol que contó con la participación de 12 equipos, la Football League, que logró ser una buena iniciativa para alternar con los torneos de copa.



Equipos que pertenecían a estas entidades ganarían los torneos de liga y de copa al mismo tiempo, y con estos eventos, se creó una mejor distribución entre profesionales y aficionados, así como el inicio de las grandes transacciones como la de Alf Common, primera que se hacía en el mundo, aunque con cantidades que distan mucho de lo que es actualmente la danza de millones de dólares con se transfiere a los jugadores de todo el mundo.

Los ”Throstles” llegaron a la final de la Copa FA por tercera vez consecutiva, y finalmente lograron su máximo objetivo, gracias al exterior derecho de 19 años ”Billy” Bassett, que se convertiría más tarde en un famoso extremo, y en este partido superó repetidamente al defensa ”Nick” Ross. El gol de la victoria lo anotó ”Spry” Woodhall, a quien le gustaba el juego con combinaciones y más tarde fichó por el Wolverhampton. El capitán del WBA, Albert Bayliss, fue un potente delantero centro siempre peligroso ante la portería contraria. Los vencedores fueron capaces de contener al goleador ”Jimmy” Ross y al creador John Goodall, quienes habían conseguido entre los dos cuatro goles en las semifinales. A pesar de sus grandes éxitos en la FA Cup (1886-1888), el WBA no tenia entrenador, sino un comité.
