Seis partidos de dieciseisavos de final se tuvieron que decidir en partidos de desempate, hallándose presentes en ellos los dos finalistas de la edición anterior. El Aston Villa se impuso al Plymouth (0:0 y 5:1) y el Newcastle United se deshizo del Derby County (0:0 y 2:1). En octavos de final se produjo la sorpresa cuando el conjunto de segunda división Manchester United eliminó al defensor del título Aston Villa (5:2). En cambio, el equipo de segunda división Blackpool fue derrotado claramente por los »Magpies« (0:5). En cuartos de final, el Newcastle United necesitó un desempate para eliminar al Birmingham FC (2:2 y 3:0). El campeón de esta temporada, Liverpool FC, tuvo que enfrentarse en semifinales a su rival local, Everton, en terreno neutral en Birmingham. Su defensa William Dunlop se marcó un gol en propia meta. El tanto de los »Toffeemen« lo marcó el exterior izquierdo Harold Hardman.
De nuevo el Newcastle United se había abierto paso luchando hasta la final y se plantó en ella con casi el mismo once, o sea, con diez jugadores de la final de 1905. El club había sido considerado durante mucho tiempo como un filial escocés, aunque en el once de Liverpool también había tres escoceses y un irlandés. Los extranjeros del Everton decidieron el partido. El portero internacional irlandés »Billy« Scott estuvo brillante, y el delantero centro »Alec« Young (23.6.1880-17.9.1959), que marcó para el equipo de Goodison Park 125 goles en 314 partidos de liga, anotó el tanto del día. Los »Toffeemen« habían ganado por fin una final (después de las de 1893 y 1897) después de una caballerosa lucha en medio de unas elevadísimas temperaturas. El Newcastle había perdido dos finales consecutivas. Uno de los principales valores de los »Magpies« era »Andy« Aitken, que poseía grandes dotes tácticas. Era también fuerte en el uno contra uno y muy difícil de superar. Además brillaba igualmente tanto como volante que como líbero. Se le conocía cariñosamente también como »Daddler«.
