FA CUP 1904-1905

En los octavos de final se dio una repetición de la final del anterior el 18 de febrero de 1905. Esta vez el Bolton Wanderers se impuso al Manchester City (2:1). El campeón de esta temporada, Newcastle United FC, necesitó un desempate para derrotar el conjunto de tercera división Tottenham Hotspur (1:1 y 4:0), y en cuartos de final superó por los pelos al conjunto de segunda división Bolton Wanderers (2:1). En las semifinales, James Howie anotó el único tanto contra los »Owls«. El exterior derecho del Everton »Jack« Sharp marcó un gol contra el Aston Villa en cada uno de los dos partidos de semifinales, pero no fueron suficientes para conducirles a la final.




El gran choque entre el nuevo campeón Newcastle y el Aston Villa, que era el club más popular del mundo, tuvo un enorme poder de convocatoria. Ambos equipos jugaron un gran fútbol. Este partido fue también un duelo anglo-escocés, ya que los »Villians« presentaron un once totalmente inglés, mientras que los »Magpies« tenían en sus filas a ¡seis! escoceses. El conjunto de Birmingham se impuso con dos tantos del delantero centro »Harry« Hampton (21.4.1885-15.3.1963), para quien esta victoria fue verdaderamente un regalo anticipado de cumpleaños. »Harry« Hampton, que había nacido en Wellington (Shropshire), era un delantero tremendamente rápido, valiente e intrépido, que tenía un agudo olfato goleador. Nunca evitaba el choque en el uno contra uno, ni tan siquiera contra el portero rival. Los »Magpies« nunca fueron capaces de controlar a este delantero centro, que fue el hombre del partido, pero no por los tantos que marcó.
