El Sheffield United eliminó al entonces vigente campeón Nottingham Forest con un gol del exterior izquierdo ”Alf” Priest, y después siguió con un dramático duelo de semifinales con el Liverpool. El segundo desempate fue suspendido en el descanso, con los ”Reds” de Liverpool ganando 1:0, después que Fallowfield (Manchester) fuese repetidamente invadido por los espectadores. En el tercer desempate, el interior derecho escocés Walter John Beer anotó el gol de la victoria para el United.

Los ”Rams”, con el tres veces goleador de semifinales ”Steve” Bloomer, se vieron de nuevo favorecidos sobre el Sheffield United, que había acabado de jugar tres partidos extra de copa en ocho días. No obstante, después del cambio de porterías, los ”Blades” jugaron como posesos y obtuvieron un clara victoria inesperada, siendo el exterior derecho ”Wally” Bennett (1874-6.4.1908) el conductor de la remontada. Este dos veces internacional con Inglaterra era temperamental pero irregular y falleció en un accidente de mina. El último gol fue marcado por el otro exterior, ”Alf” Priest (1875-5.5.1922), que también disputó un partido internacional con Inglaterra
