El superequipo del Aston Villa, que en las últimas temporadas había ganado alternativamente la liga y la copa, se convirtió en el segundo club inglés en conseguir el doblete, en 1897. No obstante, cuando los ”Villans” se enfrentaron a los ”Toffeemen”, éstos opusieron inesperadamente una dura resistencia. Los dos últimos goles del partido (todos los goles se marcaron en los primeros 45 minutos) fueron anotados por medios volantes: el segundo por el escocés ”Dick” Boyle, y el primero por el internacional inglés ”Jimmy” Crabtree (23.12.1871-18.6.1908), que había sido 14 veces internacional con Inglaterra y se había marchado a Birmingham procedente del Burnley sólo dos años antes. ”Jimmy” era un jugador polivalente, mordaz si cabe, aunque magistral en muchas facetas. Fue también reseñable que dos conjuntos de Liverpool llegasen a las semifinales, aunque afortunadamente no se enfrentaron en ellas. Este campeonato fue disputado por 244 equipos. La Copa FA se había convertido desde hacía mucho tiempo en la competición más popular del mundo, y ejercía una fascinación cada vez mayor sobre los aficionados.
