El Sheffield Wednesday, que en 1890 había sufrido la mayor derrota de toda final de Copa FA, aprovechó mejor sus oportunidades en esta ocasión, y después de encajar un gol tempranero, dio la vuelta al partido en seis minutos. El jugador de 26 años ”Fred” Spiksley anotó el gol de la victoria bastante pronto en el partido. Este exterior izquierdo era rápido y buen regateador. Fue internacional con Inglaterra en siete ocasiones. Los ”Wolves” no habían alineado tampoco en esta ocasión a ningún extranjero, una rareza ya en el fútbol inglés profesional de aquel tiempo. También se había convertido en algo poco habitual que un club amateur de Londres llegase a los últimos treintaidosavos. Por entonces, los clubes amateurs ingleses ya jugaban a parte su propio campeonato, la “FA Amateur Cup“.
