Después de que el West Bromwich Albion (WBA) eliminara a los entonces vigentes campeones en octavos de final, al Sheffield Wednesday en cuartos y al Nottingham Forest en semifinales (este último después de dos desempates), se había llegado a la reedición de la final de 1887. Esta vez los ”Throstles” pudieron tomarse la revancha sobre los ”Villans”, aunque ambos onces sólo contaron con dos de sus jugadores de 1887. El exterior izquierdo "Jasper" Geddes, que anotó cinco goles en el segundo desempate de las semifinales contra los ”Reds” de Nottingham también marcó en la final, aunque no fue suficiente ante la brillante línea de medios formada por ”Baldy” Reynolds, ”Charly” Perry y ”Billy” Groves. El cerebro del Birmingham John Devey (hermano de Harry) fue bien neutralizado. El último de los clubes amateurs de Londres fue eliminado en 1/16 de final, siendo éste el Old Westminster, que fue eliminado por el posterior campeón WBA y sólo pudo sólo alinear a 10 jugadores.
