Los dos últimos equipos de Londres fueron eliminados en la primera ronda (treintaidosavos), y exceptuando al Bootle, que sería eliminado en cuartos de final por el entonces vigente campeón Blackburn Rovers (7:0), los últimos ocho clasificados comprendían sólo equipos de la liga inglesa de élite. John Southworth (1867-16.10.1956), un ávido goleador de las anteriores rondas de copa, también anotó el gol de la victoria contra los ”Wolves” en las semifinales.

En la final contra los ”Owls”, el exterior izquierdo ”Billy” Townley, del que se temían sus disparos a larga distancia, fue el jugador del partido con la firma de sus tres tantos. Era maestro de profesión, pero pronto se dedicaría a ejercer de entrenador, a partir de 1909 también en Holanda, Suecia, Suiza y Alemania (hasta 1934). Después de tres años en blanco, el Rovers había ganado por cuarta vez la Copa FA en cinco intentos, ganando también por el marcador más alto en una final de Copa FA hasta hoy, y siendo esto contra un conjunto que no tenía entrenador (manager).
