Hacia finales de los años 1890's, la superioridad del Rangers y de los “Celts” fue haciéndose cada vez más evidente en el fútbol escocés. Ambos conjuntos se enfrentaron en las semifinales. El primer partido, al que asistieron 33,000 espectadores, terminó en tablas, pero en el desempate, los “Bhoys”, ahora ante 32.000 aficionados, fueron claramente el mejor equipo. La sorpresa fue la buena actuación del Queen's Park FC, que había permanecido amateur. En la final, los “Spiders” jugaron extraordinariamente bien, por lo que los aficionados pudieron presenciar un partido fascinante. En la segunda parte, no fueron los profesionales sino los amateurs los que fueron el mejor equipo, llegando a estar a punto de empatar.
